Noblesse Oblige

Rosewood Manor, Henfordshire
Home to Lord and Lady Kensington and their daughter Lady Claire

Lord Kensington’s eyes widened as he answered the door, his surprise intensifying at the sight of the bouquet of soft pink roses in Jake’s hand.

“Claire. CLAIRE! You have a caller,” he shouted, half-turned, while ushering Jake into the parlour, still staring at him. Jake attempted pleasant small talk, but the responses were brief, rehearsed, and distracted. Lady Kensington entered, her expression curious.

“George, I have just taken the most peculiar phone call from the palace… Oh, Lord Jake,” she said, her tone shifting to one of mild surprise when she noticed the flowers in his hand.

“What about the palace?” George inquired, his brow furrowing.

“Oh, they request to see us,” she replied, her voice tinged with intrigue.

“Ah, I bet they would. And I further believe I know why,” George responded, a knowing look in his eyes.

Lady Claire Kensington entered, and Jake’s smile broadened, becoming warmer and more genuine. His eyes lit up, mirroring Claire’s own delighted expression. She smiled too, while her parents exchanged glances, watching as Jake gallantly handed the flowers to Claire, whose cheeks flushed a shade nearly matching the roses. Jake followed her to the kitchen for the offered tea, while she found a vase for the bouquet.

“How would the king know about this before we do?” Lord Kensington asked, his tone skeptical.

“Well, the queen is a close friend of Lord Jake’s mother. Presumably, their grapevine is faster,” Lady Kensington replied, a hint of amusement in her voice.

“I am not sure how I feel about this. It’s been barely two months since he broke his engagement to Lady DeMercier, a very inadequate time…” George muttered, his concern evident.

“George! You are mad! This is good news. We were both worried about not having an heir. There you go. We should support it. Even a Lord Jake from a fairly newly ennobled family like the Camerons would be better than no husband at all, or worse some other riffraff she might find on one of her many travels,” Lady Kensington said firmly, her tone brooking no argument.

“That is certainly true. Well, no time like the present. Shall we head over to the palace to see what the king wants?” George suggested, his resolve strengthening.

“And leave Claire with Jake? That’s improper!” Lady Kensington exclaimed, her voice rising in disapproval.

“Beth, I assure you, they are 24 years old. If they wanted to be improper, they wouldn’t have to wait for us to leave the house. For all we know they already have found ways without us ever knowing,” George replied, a touch of exasperation in his voice.

“Oh, George! Claire would never!” Lady Kensington protested; her tone scandalized.

“I agree, we raised a proper lady, so there is no reason for us to worry. I will go change, suggest you do the same, and then let’s call James to bring the car round,” George concluded, his tone decisive.

Meanwhile, Jake watched Claire in the kitchen, his attempts to help thwarted by her insistence that he sit while she arranged the flowers and set out biscuits. As the tea kettle boiled, Jake crunched on a biscuit, grinning.

“Betcha didn’t expect me to just show up, huh?” he said, his tone playful.

“I most certainly did not,” she replied with a smile.

“I felt enough time has passed to make myself clearer. You don’t want it to be a complete surprise when we announce that we are a couple,” Jake continued, his voice earnest.

Claire, who had her back turned, spun around, glaring at him with her lips parted in shock.

“Jake! We are most decidedly NOT a couple. That would imply too many things. We are… seeing each other casually,” she retorted, her tone firm.

“I kissed you. Many times. And we both enjoy it, or would you deny that?” Jake challenged, his eyes twinkling.

“I would not. I do enjoy it very much,” Claire admitted, her voice softening.

“So, what would it take in your book for us to be official?” Jake asked, leaning forward.

“Oh, most certainly a talk with both our parents would be in order,” Claire replied, her tone matter-of-fact.

“Okay,” Jake said, rising from his chair, but Claire quickly stepped in front of him, her hands on his shoulders.

“Not now!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide.

“Why not? No time like the present, right? Or do you have doubts?” Jake asked, his voice gentle but probing.

“Of course not. But, it feels… rushed,” Claire confessed, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

Jake was about to reply when his eyes flicked past Claire. She turned to find her parents standing in the doorway.

“Claire darling, apologies to interrupt, but we have been called to the palace by His Majesty. We shall leave at once,” Lord Kensington announced, his tone authoritative.

“Oh, I will get my coat,” Claire said, moving to comply.

“No, not you, darling. You may stay here and entertain Lord Cameron. In the parlour. We can rely on you being a proper hostess?” Lord Kensington’s eyes moved from his daughter to Jake, a warning clear in his gaze.

“Of course, Father,” Claire replied, while Jake nodded in agreement.

After they left, Claire turned to Jake, her expression puzzled.

“What is all that about?” she asked.

“How would I know?” Jake shrugged.

“Well, your mother is Her Majesty’s closest friend,” Claire pointed out.

“Yeah, and the queen is also my cousin, but that doesn’t mean I get invited to their girls’ teas and all,” Jake replied, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

“Do you think it’s about… us?” Claire asked, her voice dropping to a whisper.

“How could it be? Nobody knows,” Jake said, shaking his head.

“You haven’t told your parents about… me?” Claire asked, her voice tinged with concern.

“Claire, you made me swear I wouldn’t to say anything to anyone. So, I haven’t. Besides, my mom can’t keep a secret. The moment I said anything, all of Henfordshire, and probably Tartosa, Newcrest, San Sequoia, well, pretty much the entire world would know. My mom is from a large family. They talk. She cannot help but talk,” Jake explained, his tone reassuring.

“I see. Well, it would appear we should decide how and when to make this more known. You are right, it is time to elevate our relationship to actually be a relationship. Even I get tired of being proper ALL the time and I wish to finally be able to be improper with you,” Claire said thoughtfully.

Jake’s smile turned into a grin, and he wiggled his eyebrows. Giggling, Claire swatted at him.

“Stop it! Don’t you even say anything now,” she teased.

“Well, Claire, that’s how you can tell a healthy man from those inbred bozos the hills are crawling with here. If any straight man under the age of 80 looks at you and doesn’t think THAT, they are broken and you should run. I am just happy that you evidently look at me and think THAT as well,” Jake said, his tone playful.

“You are simply despicable! But you are also adorable. And to tell a very unladylike truth, I am rather eager to officially hold your hand, kiss you and all those things,” she giggled, tickling his chin. He grabbed her hand and kissed it, then kissed her.

Cromwell Palace
Main residence of the King and Queen and their four children

Meanwhile, her parents had made it to the palace, ushered into His Royal Majesty King Maximilian Cromwell’s study.

After the usual polite small talk, King Maximilian came straight to the topic.

“As you both are aware, I am sure, my eldest daughter, the Princess Royale Victoria, has been rather friendly with a certain stable boy by the name of Liam Hawthorne. While it is clearly not proper for them to fraternize, my admittedly very modern views and feelings about the future of the monarchy and nobility and my efforts to modernize the entire system are very clear and have undoubtedly been the topic of much discussion. Therefore, with my wife’s counsel, we decided not to stand in the way of their friendship. However, since Victoria is the Princess Royale, we have conducted a thorough investigation into young Mr. Hawthorne’s background. His mother is unfortunately deceased, and his father did not recall many details about his own past, while most photographs and documents from their past were lost in a house fire. Some rather disturbing—no, let me rephrase that—rather concerning news came to light. I will have this conversation with both Mr. Hawthornes later on, but I felt I should consult you both first. Truth be told, my first instinct was to speak to you alone, Lord Kensington, but my wife dissuaded me of such notions, insisting I would include you as well, Lady Kensington, as it directly affects you too.”

“Oh dear, what is it, Your Majesty? You are rather frightening me,” Lady Kensington said, her voice trembling.

“My apologies, that was not my intent. However, the news is rather awkward. I am in a position to supply you with all necessary evidence, and pending the last medical test to rule out any mistakes, which I am nearly certain there aren’t any, it would appear that young Mr. Hawthorne is, in fact, not the son of a stable master after all, but the son of a Lord. YOUR son, to be more exact, Lord Kensington,” King Maximilian revealed, his tone grave.

Lady Kensington let out a strange screech, her eyes wide, hands pressed to her mouth, while her husband just sat there, staring at the king, stiff with shock and unable to accept the folder thick with documentation that the king was handing him. Instead, King Maximilian placed it in front of him.

“How could you!?” Lady Kensington turned to her husband, then back to the king. “How sure are you, Your Majesty!?”

“Unfortunately, rather very sure, Lady Kensington. Would you like some water?” the king offered, his voice gentle.

“Brandy!” she muttered.

The king rang for a servant, and Lord Kensington didn’t react until a glass of bourbon was placed before him, which he emptied in one gulp.

“What does this mean for us now, Your Majesty?” Lord Kensington asked, his voice hollow.

“Well, obviously you will have no choice but to accept paternity, considering young Mr. Hawthorne is still a minor. The rest will be in the hands of the courts, I believe, but that largely depends on what his legal guardian wishes to do. I am not too familiar with the local laws, but my personal legal counsel has advised me that under these peculiar circumstances, it can’t be swept under the rug. We must right this wrong, and due to my personal investment in the matter, I would rather insist you do, Lord Kensington. You would agree it is a lot more digestible to your peers if my darling daughter were to befriend a young man of at least partial social standing. While they are both still rather young, normally a parent might not think too much about their future, but knowing my daughter as well as I do, I am confident in saying that it is well within the realm of possibilities that they will still be as friendly, if not more, in many years from now. In other words, I will do my utmost to press this issue to become public knowledge and record, but I will give you time to relay this to your family and friends before I do. However, looking at you now, this closely, and having sat across from young Mr. Liam plenty of times to have him look at me from big eyes of sheer innocence matching my daughter’s, especially whenever I caught him sneaking in or my daughter sneaking out of places, I’ll tell you right now, Hawthorne, it would be the greatest coincidence I have ever heard of, as Liam has the exact same eye color as you. The only reason I am even paying attention to this fact is my daughter’s often prosaic swooning whilst attempting to describe the exact shade. Allow me to paraphrase: ‘The deepest, richest green like the grass of our rolling hills after a Spring shower’ was one that came to mind. I have been out riding enough times to be surprised by such a Spring downpour and can confirm, Victoria is onto something with the color. And you have the exact same shade, Kensington,” King Maximilian clearly was trying not to let on how much the newest development pleased him.

A few hours later, Max had the same talk with his stable master and his presumed son. Both took the news very hard.

Cromwell Stables
Several staff leaders live on property, among them the stablemaster Hawthorne and son

Later that same day, Princess Victoria found Liam in one of his hiding spots near the stables.

“Are you all right?” she asked, genuinely concerned.

His deep green eyes met her baby blue ones.

“I don’t know. I am not sure how I feel at all. My dad isn’t my dad and my mum… she… with… Lord Kensington? I can’t believe my dad isn’t my dad. He’s destroyed by it. I don’t want him to stop loving me… I want to be his son,” Liam said, his voice breaking.

Victoria sat down close to him, wrapping her arm around him. He leaned into it.

“I am so sorry, Liam. But Papa had to. At least now people can’t be mean about us spending time together. And you should feel better. You’re going to be a Lord,” she said softly.

“I don’t want to be a Lord, Vic. I want to be me. Just me. And I want to be my dad’s son,” Liam replied, his voice filled with anguish.

“What about me?” Victoria asked, her voice trembling.

“What do you mean?” Liam looked at her, confused.

“I said, it’s going to be so much easier if we can actually be seen together. People can be mean, Liam. Especially to people like me, like us. If you have something someone else wants, you become a target. They think being born with a title and living in a palace is worry-free and easy, so they get jealous and become mean, even though I haven’t wronged them. People have said terrible things about us, you and me,” Victoria explained, her voice filled with frustration.

“I am still a stable boy. Just now I have a different dad,” Liam muttered.

“Well, I am not too certain, but I believe Lord Kensington has to claim you publicly, your records will get corrected. You will probably be a Lordship then too,” Victoria said, trying to reassure him.

“Super. Lord Hawthorne mucking out stables and saddling horses for others. No wonder they won’t say things about you anymore, they’ll be too busy laughing at me,” Liam said bitterly.

“Liam, your name will have to change. If the DNA test comes back confirming it, your records will be corrected, and you will become an heir to the Kensington’s estate, including, but not limited to their main residence, Rosewood Manor, and their wealth, which is substantial. You won’t ever have to muck a single stable unless you wish to do so, in fact, you can’t, you’re gonna be busy learning many of the things my siblings and I had to learn. You’re Lady Claire’s half-brother. She’s very nice, I think the nicest out of all of them, so you hit the jackpot there. Could have been worse, trust me,” Victoria said, her tone gentle and comforting.

“A sister? I don’t even know the Kensingtons. They never come here, I only ever see them from a distance,” Liam replied, his voice tinged with confusion.

“They have their own stables. Lady Claire loves horses, just like you and I do. I run into her a lot when riding out with William. But he’s too busy now chatting with Grace and Lady Claire is too busy with Jake. Haven’t you heard? I think they are dating. But don’t tell anyone. You didn’t hear it from me,” Victoria said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.

Several days later

Liam stared at Victoria, his mind racing with the implications of his newfound identity. The weight of the revelation pressed heavily on his shoulders, and he felt a mix of anger, confusion, and fear as the impending move to his new home and identity drew closer. Luckily, Rosewood Manor was but a stone’s throw away from the Cromwell Stables, where he had lived for many years. You could walk to the estate from there.

“Victoria, I don’t know how to handle this. Everything I thought I knew about my life is a lie, I don’t even know who I am anymore,” he said, his voice trembling.

Victoria squeezed his hand reassuringly. “I understand, Liam. You will always be you, but now a slightly different you. The title and new last name will help you a lot, this I promise you. You can use it for good, once you are an adult, you can help be the change this society needs, like my parents have been doing. It’s rough and often met with harsh criticism, but you are one of the people, you can fight for the people, but with the proper name, title and funds. It’s a lot to take in. But you don’t have to go through this alone. You have me, and soon you’ll have a new family who will support you. And I am sure your dad–umm, well, Mr. Hawthorne—still will, too. You have been his son for 17 years and he your dad, even if not in blood, but that won’t change overnight, if ever, and I don’t think it really has to. You’re 17, most people go away to college when they are 18 anyway, so in a way this is a little like that, isn’t it?” she tried to make the change more digestible for him.

Liam sighed, looking down at the ground. “Yeah, that’s what dad said. I mean, my old dad. I can always come to him and all that, I can still call him dad, but he is making me move to the Rosewood Manor, said it’s my rightful place. He said I am a good kid, that he loves me, but that I deserve more than he would ever be able to give me. He wants me to move, the Kensingtons want me to move and the king wants me to move, so I guess I have no choice. I just hope they accept me. I don’t want to be an outsider in my own family. A family I haven’t even met yet.”

Victoria smiled gently. “From what I know of Lady Claire, she’ll welcome you with open arms. And as for the rest of the Kensingtons, they’ll come around. You’re one of them now and in those circles that means something. And look, it’s right there, you fall down thrice and you are at their estate. You can see Cromwell Stables from nearly every window.” she pointed at the Rosewood Manor which borders were maybe 500 yards from the edges of Cromwell Stables.

Just then, a stable hand approached, bowing slightly. “Your Highness, Lord Liam, the King has called down, he requests your presence in the royal study right away if you please.”

Liam’s eyes widened. “Lord Liam? That sounds so strange.”

Victoria chuckled. “You’ll get used to it. Technically, he should have addressed you as Lord Kensington unless you are very close, but I think everyone needs time to get used to that. Come on, let’s go see what Papa wants.”

They headed towards the golf cart Victoria had taken to the stables, the ride up to the palace was short and quiet.

As they walked towards the study, Liam’s heart pounded in his chest. He felt like he was walking into a new world, one where he didn’t quite belong. But with Victoria by his side, he felt a glimmer of hope. His hand started searching for hers, she slipped hers into his, squeezing as they proceeded.

When they entered the study, they found King Maximilian and Lord Kensington deep in conversation. Both men looked up as they entered, their expressions serious.

“Ah, Liam, Victoria, please join us,” the King said, gesturing to the chairs opposite him.

Liam sat down, feeling the weight of their gazes on him. “Your Majesty, Lord Kensington,” he greeted them, his voice steady despite his nerves, as he couldn’t help but stare at the man who was his real father, trying to find similarities.

King Maximilian leaned forward, his expression softening. “Liam, I know this is still a lot to take in. But I want you to know that you have our full support. We will do everything we can to make this transition as smooth as possible for you. However, Lord Kensington is here to take you to your new residence. Your personal belongings will be moved for you. Due to the negligible distance to your old him we didn’t find long goodbyes necessary.”

Lord Kensington nodded. “Indeed. You are my son, and I will do my duty by you. We will ensure that you will receive all the necessary schooling and then are properly introduced to society and that your place in the family is secure. And of course, we shall attempt to get to know each other better. And please, don’t call me Lord Kensington. Maybe you could find it in your heart to address me as father. After all, you are Lord Kensington now as well. And I finally have a son. Sometimes fate finds light in even the darkest moments.”

Liam swallowed hard, feeling a mix of relief and apprehension. “Thank you, Your Majesty, Lord Kensington … umm …. father, Sir. I appreciate your support.” he croaked out.

Victoria squeezed his hand under the table, offering silent encouragement. Liam took a deep breath, trying to ready himself to face whatever came next.

Later that evening, Lord and Lady Kensington sat down with Claire to break the news. Claire listened in stunned silence as her parents explained the situation. Her eyes widened as she processed the information.

“So, I have a half-brother?” Claire asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Yes, darling,” Lady Kensington replied, her tone gentle. “His name is Liam, and he will be coming to live with us.”

Claire nodded slowly, trying to absorb the shock. “I see. Well, I suppose I should meet him then.”

As the days passed, the tension between Lord and Lady Kensington grew palpable. The revelation of Liam’s existence had brought their long-buried resentments to the surface. Lady Beth Kensington, already disillusioned with her marriage, saw this constant reminder of her husband’s unfaithfulness as an opportunity to seek the love and happiness she had been denied for so long.

One evening, after a particularly heated argument, Lady Beth made her decision. She approached her husband, her expression resolute.

“George, I cannot continue living this lie. Our marriage has been a facade for too long and now you made a mockery of it with an illegitimate child, the son you wanted, which I couldn’t give you. People are staring at me, with pity and glee, you are constantly on the edge, and while I know we both haven’t been exactly faithful, I was under the impression we had a silent agreement about at least making certain there would be no such … reminders, instead, you moved your constant reminder of everything that has been wrong between us into our home. Liam is a nice enough boy, none of this is his fault and I understand why he is here now, but he is also a slap in the face to me each time I see him. It’s too much. I am leaving. You, and this country,” she declared, her voice steady.

Lord Kensington stared at her, his face a mask of shock and anger. “Beth, you can’t be serious. What about our family? What about Claire? After all those years you choose NOW to abandon me, our daughter?”

“I love Claire, but I cannot stay in a loveless marriage for her sake. She is a grown young woman now, she doesn’t need me anymore, and it is more than obvious how thrilled you are to have a son now. I need to find my own happiness, and you owe me. I want a divorce, I want my fair share, and I don’t want you to make this difficult,” Beth replied, her eyes filled with determination.

Lord Kensington’s shoulders slumped as he realized the truth in her words. “Very well, Beth. If this is what you truly want, I won’t stand in your way.”

With that, Lady Beth Kensington packed her belongings and left the estate, determined to start anew. She moved to a small hotel on the mainland until she could figure out her future, where she could live without the constant scrutiny of high society.

Meanwhile, Liam began his transition to life at Rosewood Manor. He struggled initially, feeling out of place and overwhelmed by the expectations. However, he found support in unexpected places. Lady Claire, his half-sister, became a close ally, helping him navigate the complexities of their world. Princess Victoria also remained a steadfast friend, offering him emotional support and encouragement.

Despite the new developments, Liam couldn’t forget the man who had raised him. One evening, he visited his former home to speak with the man he still called dad.

“Dad, I don’t know how to thank you for everything you’ve done for me,” Liam said, his voice choked with emotion.

His father, eyes filled with tears, pulled Liam into a tight embrace. “You don’t need to thank me, son. You’ll always be my boy, no matter what. I’m proud of you, and I know you’ll do great things.”

Liam nodded, tears streaming down his face. “I love you, Dad. I promise I’ll make you proud. Don’t forget me. They keep me busy, but I promise I’ll come see you as much as I can.”

King Maximilian kept a close eye on Liam’s progress, offering guidance and support when needed. He saw potential in Liam and believed that integrating him into the nobility would ultimately strengthen the monarchy.

Over time, Liam began to find his footing. He discovered a passion for certain aspects of his new life, such as managing the estate’s lands and engaging in charitable activities. His genuine nature and determination won over many of the skeptics in high society, and he started to carve out a place for himself as Lord Liam Kensington.

Liam’s appearance had changed dramatically from his days as a poor stable hand. Gone were the torn and dirty old clothes, replaced by tailored items fitting for a young, modern 17-year-old British lord. His medium blond hair, once shaggy and falling into his face, was now neatly trimmed and styled. The worn-out handknit beanie with holes and permanent stains was a distant memory. His eyes, the same deep green color as his father’s now shone with a newfound confidence.

His mood soared when, during a first ride out with Princess Victoria since everything changed, he realized he was riding his very own horse for the first time.

As they trotted through the lush countryside, him on a chestnut-colored Dutch Warmblood named ‘Copper Dreams’ and Princess Victoria on her favorite horse, a Cremello mare named ‘Royal Symphony,’ Liam couldn’t help but smile. “I have cared for more horses than I can recount, but I have never owned one. I can’t believe it,” he said, his voice filled with awe.

Victoria smiled at him, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Well, you’ll have plenty of time to believe it while I leave you in the dust. Heya Symphy, show him why you are the fastest horse near or far!” she called out, urging her horse into a gallop.

Liam laughed, feeling a rush of exhilaration. “Oh, it’s on, Vic! Copper Dreams here has long, strong legs. Let’s see what you’ve got!” he shouted, spurring his horse forward.

The two raced across the fields, the wind whipping through their hair. Liam felt a sense of freedom and joy he had never known before. As they reached the top of a hill, he pulled Copper Dreams to a stop, looking out over the breathtaking landscape.

Victoria joined him, her cheeks flushed with excitement. “Not bad, Lord Liam. Not bad at all,” she said, her tone teasing.

Liam grinned, his heart pounding with happiness. “Thank you, Victoria. For everything. This means more to me than you can imagine.”

Victoria smiled warmly. “You’re welcome, Liam. You deserve it. And there’s so much more to come. You’ll see, it’s still new, still a shock, but all this is good news.”

As Liam adjusted to his new life, the relationship between Lady Claire and Lord Jake continued to develop. Their romance faced its own set of challenges, especially with the added scrutiny from society and their families. However, their old bond grew stronger as they supported each other through the upheavals.

As the dust began to settle, Jake and Claire decided it was time to announce their relationship. They chose a quiet evening at Everwood Estate, home to Lord Gavin and Lady Bianca Cameron, and their two adult children, 18-year-old Lady Maeve and 24-year-old Lord Jake. They invited close family and friends for a small gathering. As everyone enjoyed the evening, Jake stood up, holding Claire’s hand.

“Everyone, Claire and I have something to share,” Jake began, his voice steady but filled with emotion. “We have decided to make our relationship official. We are a couple. We’re sorry we kept our growing closeness a secret, but we have been seeing each other for several months now. We are certain we’d like to explore a romantic future together, but we wanted to do it properly, despite all the recent events.”

There was a moment of stunned silence before the room erupted in applause and congratulations. Claire’s eyes sparkled with happiness as she looked at Jake, knowing that their love had finally been acknowledged.

Lady Bianca, exuberant and overjoyed, exclaimed, “Fantastico! Finalmente! Sono così felice per voi due!” She rushed to embrace them, her excitement palpable. (“Fantastic! Finally! I am so happy for the both of you.”)

Lord Gavin, though typically quiet, showed his excitement with a warm smile and a nod. “Congratulations, both of you,” he said softly.

Lady Maeve, loud and spontaneous as ever, cheered, “About time, you two! This calls for a celebration! I say partaaaaayyy, Cameron style!”

Claire’s parents and half-brother Liam also expressed their joy, adding to the festive atmosphere. Lady Beth had traveled in for the occasion, her eyes shining with pride and happiness. Lord George, who still lived at Rosewood Manor with Claire and 17-year-old Liam, gave a warm smile and nod of approval.

Claire squeezed Jake’s hand, feeling a sense of peace and joy. They had faced many challenges, together and on their own, but their old bond and new love had prevailed. Together, they looked forward to a future filled with hope and promise.

As the announcement of Jake and Claire’s relationship settled in, life at Everwood Estate began to find a new rhythm. Liam, now officially recognized as Lord Liam Kensington, continued to adapt to his new role. His days were filled with lessons in etiquette, history, and the responsibilities of nobility. Despite the challenges, he found solace in the support of his new family and friends.

Eventually, life continued to evolve. Lady Beth, now free from her marriage, embarked on a journey of self-discovery. She traveled, met new people, moved abroad, and eventually found a partner who truly loved and respected her. Her story became one of resilience and the pursuit of happiness against all odds.

Lord George, though initially struggling with the changes, found a renewed sense of purpose in guiding Liam. He took pride in watching his son grow into his new role, and their relationship deepened as they spent more time together.

17-year-old Liam and 16-year-old Victoria now didn’t have to hide their friendship anymore either, or the way it had started to evolve. Friendly nudges started to cause tingles all over in both, innocent glances became meaningful, and during his very first official ball as invited attendee of the royal family, they danced together, before sneaking away into the royal gardens where they shared their very first kiss.

As Jake and Claire’s relationship flourished, they faced the challenges of their new status with determination and grace, supporting each other through thick and thin. Their love story became an inspiration to those around them, a testament to the power of love and resilience.

The grand ball at the royal Cromwell Palace was the perfect setting for their public debut as a couple. The opulent chandeliers cast a warm glow over the elegantly dressed guests, and the air was filled with the soft strains of a waltz. Jake and Claire moved through the crowd with an effortless grace, their hands intertwined, their smiles radiant.

However, not everyone shared in their joy. Lady Dominique DeMercier, Jake’s former fiancée, stood at the edge of the ballroom, her eyes following the couple with a steely intensity. Though she maintained her composure, her glares spoke volumes. The flicker of hurt and anger in her eyes was unmistakable, a silent testament to the pain of seeing the man she once loved with another.

As the evening progressed, Dominique’s presence became a shadow over the festivities. Her polite but cold demeanor was a stark contrast to the warmth and happiness that surrounded Jake and Claire. Yet, even in the face of such silent opposition, the couple remained undeterred. They danced and laughed, their love shining brighter than ever, a beacon of hope and defiance.
