The Anatomy and Physiology of the Vampyr and their Social Structure

A comprehensive guide to the physiology, culture, and governance of the immortal world.

1. Physiology of the Vampire

The Spark

Vampirism is not a disease or curse — it is a supernatural condition known as the spark, a force that halts mortal processes and replaces them with something otherworldly. Once ignited, the spark:

  • stops the heartbeat
  • ends digestion
  • slows aging to a near standstill
  • rewires the senses
  • binds the vampire to blood as their primary nourishment

Their skin cools, their fangs are permanent, and their bodies become subtly uncanny — familiar, but not quite mortal.

Most vampires learn early to mask these differences, blending into mortal society through discipline, restraint, and centuries of perfected performance.

Abilities

Porting (Teleportation)

A rare and difficult skill requiring years of training. Only disciplined vampires can port safely and accurately.

Daywalking

Many adapt to daylight over time, though the sun remains the leading cause of death among the careless or untrained.

Enhanced Senses

Sight, hearing, and occult perception are heightened to overwhelming levels unless carefully controlled.

Compulsion

A hypnotic influence over mortal minds. Powerful, but dangerous without restraint.

Dining

Food and drink offer no nourishment, but can be consumed for pleasure or disguise.

Reproduction & The Severing

Vampires once reproduced naturally, though even then fertility was fragile. Children born with the spark were rare and politically significant.

But as ancient bloodlines grew too powerful, something changed.

Scholars call it the Severing.

The spark withdrew from creation entirely. Now:

  • Two vampires cannot conceive.
  • A vampire and mortal may conceive, but the child is always mortal.
  • No new immortal children will ever be born.
  • Vampires can only be created through turning — and turning is strictly regulated.

The Immortal Thirteen are the final generation of naturally born immortals.

Mortality

Immortality is not invincibility. Vampires may die from:

  • Sun exposure
  • Lethal toxins (e.g., concentrated garlic oil)
  • Violence from stronger vampires
  • Neglect after turning
  • Suicide

Upon death, their bodies rapidly age to their mortal equivalent. Elders crumble to dust; younger vampires leave behind a corpse.

2. Society & Law

Vampire society is ancient, structured, and uncompromising. Its laws exist to prevent the chaos that once destroyed Cesare Vannucci’s mortal family.

Turnings

All turnings require prior approval from the Grand Master Elder.

Accidental turnings were once forgiven — until Blaine Cameron. His chaotic, unintended turning decades ago forced Cesare to rewrite the law:

No accidental turnings. No exceptions.

Unsanctioned turnings now result in the execution of both sire and offspring.

Feeding

Forbidden:

  • minors
  • the pregnant
  • the infirm
  • public feeding without consent

Killing mortals or vampires is a capital crime.

Romantic Bonds

Relationships with witches or werewolves are discouraged due to centuries of conflict. Not illegal anymore— but politically fraught.

Unturning

Adults cannot be unturned — attempts were catastrophic and are now forbidden.

3. The Vannucci Dynasty

Cesare Vannucci — Grand Master Elder

Born in 1505 to a noble Florentine family, Cesare witnessed his family’s execution for a crime they did not commit. Turned against his will and abandoned alongside his sister Caterina, he rebuilt himself through discipline, intellect, and sheer refusal to succumb.

He forged the laws that now govern all vampires.

His authority resembles that of a king or a pope. His mercy has limits. His justice does not.

No vampire alive can defeat him.

4. Leadership Structure of the Immortal Thirteen

The Immortal Thirteen are not the only vampires — they are the ruling core, the most powerful and politically indispensable immortals in existence.

Their roles are divided into four branches:

A. The Administrative Triad

The mind of the coven.

Cesare Vannucci

Grand Master Elder. Turned vampire. The unyielding patriarch of the Vannucci line.

Riordan Hargrave

The Steward. Born vampire. Cesare’s right hand, master of secrets and diplomacy.

Scarlett Cameron (née Vannucci)

The Daughter of Legends. Born vampire. The coven’s public face and cultural icon.

B. The Enforcers

The blade of the coven. Only three exist at a time — always of Vannucci blood.

Caelan Vannucci

The Hunter. Born vampire. Commander of the Enforcers.

Connell O’Cavanaugh

The Blade‑Bearer. Born vampire. Prime Enforcer.

Damon O’Cavanaugh

The Silent Specter. Born vampire. The future of the Enforcers.

C. The Matriarchal Circle

The heart of the coven. They maintain internal stability, tradition, and emotional discipline.

Branwen Vannucci

The Shadow Stitched in Silk. Born vampire. Matriarch and keeper of ancient rites.

Rhiannon Vannucci (née O’Cavanaugh)

The Storm in a Teacup. Born vampire. Protector of the young and fiercely loyal.

Lavinia Hargrave

Turned vampire. The steel behind the Hargrave name. Social architect and political hostess.

D. The Others

Blaine Cameron

The Rockstar. Turned vampire. His accidental turning forced Cesare to rewrite the law. Chaotic, charismatic, and impossible to ignore.

Artemus Levesque

The Golden Vampire. Turned vampire. A rare Reaper‑aligned immortal — healer of dying vampires, stabilizer of unstable sparks, and guide for the newly turned. Married to Leeora Levesque, witch and necromancer, forming the most powerful life‑and‑death pair in the supernatural world.

5. The Wider Vampire World

Many vampires exist beyond the Thirteen:

  • solitary immortals
  • small covens
  • ancient clans
  • mortals who know the truth
  • hunters who refuse to forget

Most reside in strongholds like Forgotten Hollow and Ravenwood, while others blend into mortal society.

Traditional covens once enforced rigid hierarchies, but younger vampires now challenge these norms.

Black clothing remains a practical choice — tradition, stealth, and symbolism.

6. The Sacred Mounts of the Hollow

As spoken by Riordan Hargrave, Keeper of the Stables:

  • Falciatore — Caelan’s mount
  • Tenebrae — Cesare’s stallion
  • Luce Nera — Riordan’s own
  • Giudizio — Connell’s warhorse
  • Spettro — Damon’s steed

Nearly immortal, bred for shadow and silence. Porting drains the body; vehicles cannot enter rugged terrain. So the horses carry the hunt.
