The Chosen One

Palazzo di Rinaldi, Kingdom of Tartosa – A Night of Celebration

Tears of happiness streamed down their faces as cousins Victoria Cromwell and Francesca Rinaldi embraced tightly. The lost daughter had come home, filling her parents with such delight that her father conceded his obstinacy and accepted her chosen partner. In a gesture of gratitude for bringing his daughter back safely—or perhaps for his own reassurance—he bestowed upon Niccolo Auditore the title of Conte (Count), ensuring his daughter would not wed a commoner.

The sun set over the sparkling waters of Tartosa, casting a warm, golden glow on the royal palace. It was an evening of unexpected joy and celebration. An impromptu engagement had been announced by the Tartosa royals, setting the stage for a grand festivity. The palace grounds buzzed with excitement as royals, nobles, and VIPs from across the globe gathered for this momentous occasion, managing to arrive on such short notice.

Among the distinguished guests were the royal family of Henfordshire. King Maximilian and Queen Aria-Grace, their regal presence commanding attention, led their children—Crown Prince William, Princess Victoria, and the younger daughters, Vivienne and Veronica—into the heart of the celebration. The young royals, dressed in elegant evening attire, moved gracefully through the crowd, their bright smiles and striking looks captivating everyone they encountered.

The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses. The grandeur of the palace, adorned with opulent decorations and twinkling lights, added to the enchantment of the night. Victoria and William exchanged excited glances, their hearts swelling with happiness for the newly engaged couple. The sense of camaraderie among the attendees was palpable, as old friends reunited and new alliances were forged.

As the night unfolded, Victoria couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the magnificence of the event. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, mingling with the aroma of delectable cuisine. The sound of a live orchestra playing a beautiful melody added to the magical ambiance. It was a night to remember, a celebration of love and unity that brought everyone together under the starry sky. But it also made her sad, as everyone past their childhood days seemed to be here with a special someone, except her. Her usual consort, Hendrik DeWinter, Duke of Zeehaven and the Isles, had not been able to accompany her due to some last-minute unforeseen circumstances.

Private Jet, En Route to Henfordshire – An Urgent Decision

The gentle hum of the private jet’s engines created a soothing background as it cruised through the night sky, the cabin dimly lit with a soft, ambient glow. The scent of fresh leather and subtle perfume filled the air, mingling with the faint aroma of in-flight refreshments. The luxurious interior, with its plush seats and elegant décor, provided a stark contrast to the tension brewing inside.
Victoria, now returning from the Tartosa festivities with her family, was on the private jet with her brother William. She dwelled on the news that her cousin, 18 years old like her, was now planning a wedding, while Victoria had barely experienced her first kiss and a couple of stolen follow-up kisses to date. Their parents and younger siblings had already arrived home on an earlier flight, as William and their father couldn’t be on the same plane to ensure succession in case of disaster.

Initially, Victoria ignored William’s mention of a news article, but her attention shifted when he sat next to her and extended his cell phone towards her, displaying the article.

“We should probably at least call, if not go there. Mum and Dad will definitely agree, but we need to leave the two little ones home; they have school,” William said, his voice measured but urgent.

His voice faded out as Victoria read the ‘Breaking News,’ her heart pounding with each word.

“Oh my God! I have to call him!” she exclaimed, grabbing her brother’s phone, staring at the headline, then switching to the phone keypad. Her mind raced, trying to process the information.

William quickly reclaimed his phone, slipping it into his pocket. “Victoria! You are not making calls on the plane! It can wait until we land!”

“Will, we have to go to Windenburg! Have the flight re-routed! Please!” Victoria’s voice was filled with desperation. As the Crown Prince, her brother had certain authority over the plane without prior approval from the palace, while Victoria did not.

William sighed, his brow furrowing with concern. “Little Lotte, we must head home. I have a crucial exam tomorrow that I cannot afford to miss or fail, and I still need to study for it. I need to return to Britchester. I’m confident Mum and Dad will manage to give you a few days off, and we can arrange your flight to Windenburg. However, you must ensure Hendrik is prepared for visitors. The news of both parents in an accident and now fighting for their lives must be overwhelming. He doesn’t have any siblings, right?”

The gravity of the situation hung heavy in the air, the quiet hum of the jet and the soft rustling of the pages of a nearby magazine the only sounds breaking the silence. Victoria’s mind swirled with a mix of worry and determination, knowing that they had to find a way to support Hendrik in his time of need.

Victoria’s voice trembled with emotion. “No. Just him. All alone now at some hospital, fearing for their lives! Oh my God! To think he was the one who helped with…”

She stopped abruptly as William’s sharp glare cut through her words.

“Yes, I know what he helped you with,” William’s voice was stern, his light green eyes flashing with intensity. “I can’t believe I had to figure this out on my own; we used to tell each other things, especially of this magnitude. We went to visit the Willow Creek royal family, you got some sort of message from our missing cousin, and instead of telling me, you just snuck out. How reckless of you, Victoria, after what you have been through! What we all have been through because of your abduction. Had Liam not been extra vigilant, who knows where this would have ended for everyone…”

“Vigilant?! Hardly! Liam betrayed me! Again!” Victoria’s blue eyes blazed with anger. “He knew, because I told the traitor first, only to get NO help from him, but a long lecture, or he would have NEVER even known. Nor would anyone. Except Henk. I am not that dumb, Will, I knew I couldn’t go alone any more than I could tell any of you, there aren’t that many people I could trust. I trust him, so I told him, and unlike Liam, Hendrik didn’t abuse my trust. He helped. Francesca’s message was clear. She and Niccolo needed help, not for me to just rat them out! Not like we went in blindly; we had a plan. Hendrik was going to take them to his home, he had the DeWinter’s yacht brought to Willow Creek harbor, and that is where we took them. Hendrik’s island is neutral and has no extradition agreement and we would have let everyone know they are fine. But when we heard alarm has been rung back at the DeMercier palace, we had two choices; just run and stick to the plan and lie, or tell the truth. Hendrik talked all of us into calling Uncle Gaetano instead of running, so we did. At least Uncle Gaetano remembered how to be a proper dad for once. But none of this is Liam’s credit. All he did was backstab me.”

“Seriously, Vic, that was reckless! If you got taken again, I don’t know if we all could make it through! I am glad you had Hendrik with you, but he isn’t trained security personnel, what would he have done if this would have been some sort of setup, maybe someone recognized and captured our cousin and Nico and used them to get you too? Hendrik could hardly protect you, he might have gotten himself hurt or worse if anything. I am very disappointed in you, as are Mum and Dad, and from what Mum said, you got another lecture coming from Grandma and Grandpa—and Jack,” William told her, his tone softening but still stern.

“Really, William? REALLY? YOU want to point fingers after all you have done?” Victoria’s voice quivered with frustration. “At least Henk, Francesca, Niccolo, and I didn’t get caught. We all decided together it would be best to send them back home, and they agreed. Nico missed his parents so much, as did Francesca. And now they get to plan the wedding they had been denied. Can’t you see the happy ending just needed a little nudging? And I nudged, with Henk’s help. Yay.” She motioned a mock celebration, leaving William to sigh, chuckling while shaking his head.

“Speaking of nudging, Miss Love Guru, where are we with your love triangle?” William’s tone was teasing, but his eyes were curious.

Into a wide-eyed stare, Victoria gasped at her brother. “My… what?!”

“What else would you call it? You like two boys and can’t make up your mind. Classic love triangle. You should ask our Mum how those work out normally. Or Briar Rose. Or Grandma and Grandpa. Or…”

“For heaven’s sake, stop! It’s not that. Maybe I am a bit confused, for the one I thought I wanted clearly doesn’t want me. But another one might, maybe, but won’t come out and say it, or maybe he just sees me as a friend,” Victoria said, her frustration evident.

William’s eyes narrowed slightly, his tone exasperated. “Oh, Victoria, please. Are you really so clueless? I honestly assumed you were enjoying two boys chasing you, but now I am thinking you really are so naïve. How could this be, a girl as smart as you?”

Victoria’s eyes flashed with a mix of hurt and defiance. “It’s hardly naïve if it is THEM who can’t make up their minds. I wanted Liam because I have known him so much longer, and he says he wants me, but can’t and won’t, always with new excuses. Enter a handsome young Duke, charming and sweet, who effortlessly makes me laugh, but does nothing more. I had to hug him back at Uncle Nick’s home, what you walked into. I wanted him to kiss me, but he didn’t. So, this isn’t a triangle, let alone anything to do with love, all you have is confusion, not a love triangle. You make it sound intentional. I really do not know what to think, and my feelings can’t be trusted. I thought if I held out long enough, showed him ranks and heritage meant little to me, Liam would…” Victoria stopped talking, swallowing hard and briefly averting her gaze. As both of them had been trained all their lives, knowing they would live out most of it in the public eye, she managed to control her emotions, then continued, looking at her brother. “I don’t know what to do, William. I have asked you so many times and you just won’t help me.”

“Victoria, I told you just as many times, it has nothing to do with WANTING to help, but I can’t. I can’t feel what you feel. I know what I felt, which is why I did the things I can be accused of, not all of them things I should have done, but ultimately, all of it had to happen for me to find Mina. Meaning I would do them all over again if I had to.”

“So, you are certain Mina is the one? Not Grace? Or maybe some different girl you haven’t even met yet?”

“Yes, I am certain. I cannot feel any more deeply than I do with Mina. I believed what I felt with Grace was the height of it all, but it’s different with Mina, we both felt it, it just … fit. It felt meant to be. Even Grace understands this now, after holding a strong grudge against me for a long time. Look Victoria, when certainty strikes, you will know. The urge to look further diminishes, which is never simple for either of us, a fact you are well aware of. However, I am weary of your accusations that I am not even trying to help. So, fine, here are my unvarnished thoughts, so there’s no chance of misinterpretation, as I will not say what you likely expect. Liam is decent, I admit I like him, but he’s not right for you. There, I said it. I know you and father are both enamored by the underdog appeal, but I think he carries too much baggage, and your emotions are too fragile to cope with that, plus his choice of convenience over a real attempt to be with you, you know when we both caught him with Eloise, that just did not sit right with me. His justifications and excuses have worn thin with me, and you, deep down, are also tired of them. You’re like a child who has been burnt and now fears the flame, hence you keep Hendrik at bay, despite his clear intentions. You say you wanted him to kiss you back at Uncle Nick’s place, but did you? How was he to know, I can see you like him, but if I were him, having to guess at what you want him to do would be too confusing for me to make a move of any sort. He knows you went through trauma with the abduction, we all know you are not fine, nor over it as you try to seem, so he has been very respectful of your need to heal. Yet, you keep stringing him along, inviting him everywhere Liam won’t go with you, yet more than once you abandoned him in favor of Liam, which can’t feel anything but insulting and hurtful to Hendrik. He has seen that you clearly have feelings for Liam, you made that more than obvious several times. Truth be told, if I were him, unless I was absolutely crazy about you, I would have given up on you long ago. If he did not truly care for you, he would not tolerate your pursuit of the former stableboy. Yes, I know, Liam has noble status now, but let’s be honest, he will always be a stableboy, I know it, you know it and he certainly knows it as I heard him say it himself many times. Speak of equality if you will, Vic, but in private, we acknowledge our royal status and the inherent inequality with those without titles, and those who didn’t have their titles at birth. Occasionally, such unions succeed, as with our parents, but it’s far from effortless. Mum has shared the struggles she faced with us many times, and we are well aware of the rest, the divorce and all. It took much more than love to make it work. You wanted the way I see this, this is it, I feel you are throwing yourself away on someone who clearly can’t appreciate what a wonderful person I know you are, while you keep slapping the one I think would be perfect for you in the face over and over again.”

As William’s words echoed out, Victoria’s eyes had grown wide, mouth agape she stared at her big brother and best friend, trying to digest his honest words.
“Wow, you are right, this is not at all what I expected you to say. I am shocked. So, you’re suggesting I should just forget about Liam and pursue Hendrik, just like that?”

“No, Victoria, that would be just as silly. If I were you, I would take a very critical look at Liam and your options with him, if there even are any. And I would spend some time getting to know Hendrik better, give it a real chance, see how you feel around him. You may discover more common ground than you initially thought. I have spent a lot of time with him on campus and whenever you ditched the poor guy again in favor of Liam, and I know you better than most other people, so I say he is worth a closer look.”

Victoria’s voice was tinged with frustration. “A closer look? Will, I’m aware of all there is to know about Henk. We talk all the time. He’s a Duke, the sole heir to aging parents, which is why he’s already taking on most of his father’s responsibilities. He’s studying international relations to become a proficient diplomat like his father, and… he lives on an island. He has a great sense of humor, is patient, calm, clearly level-headed, and loyal. There, Duke Hendrik DeWinter in a nutshell.”

William leaned back, his light green eyes thoughtful. “Victoria, anyone with internet access could tell you that. He’s a visionary, like you. He’s empathetic, like you. And if his parents don’t make it, it will be tough for him, alone on his island. We both know Mina and her brother will support him, but Alex is a king now; there’s a limit to how much he can comfort one of his nobles. And with Mina at university with us, I wouldn’t appreciate her spending the little free time we have with another man. That should be YOUR role if you truly care about him. If not, the honorable thing would be to be truthful with him, so you both can move forward. Separately.”

Victoria looked at her brother, her cheeks reddening, then gazed out the window, her bright blue eyes reflecting her inner turmoil. William, feeling remorseful, sighed and stroked her hand gently.

“Little Lotte, I apologize. I was too severe…” he said softly, but she turned to him, her expression determined.

“No. No, you were just like Papa. You were kind about it, but you told me exactly what I needed to hear in a manner that I could hear it. I don’t know how or when you grew up so much, but it makes me think I should too. And you’ve said nothing I wasn’t already aware of. I’ve been deceiving myself. You were right about everything. I’ll go to Windenburg and follow your advice. And about the rest as well,” she said with a smile, her voice steady despite the emotions swirling inside her.

After a heartfelt conversation with her parents, some freshening up, and repacking, Victoria was on her way to Windenburg. The same private jet that had ferried her family back from Tartosa was now refueled and staffed with a fresh crew. As the jet soared through the skies, Victoria couldn’t shake the nervous excitement fluttering in her chest.

Duchy of DeWinter, Zeehaven Isle – A Place of Refuge

Upon landing, a sleek black car sent by the House DeWinter was waiting to whisk her away to the ferry dock. The drive through the picturesque landscape did little to calm her racing heart. Finally, the car pulled to a stop, and as Victoria stepped out, she was greeted by the sight of Hendrik, the young duke himself, standing at the ferry dock. He wore a warm smile that reached his eyes, and the sight of him immediately made her feel at ease.

“Henk, goodness, you didn’t have to come get me in person. How are you?” she asked, her voice filled with genuine concern.

“Oh, I am much better now. After you called to say you would come here, the hospital called to tell me both will pull through. I have actually spoken with both of them myself, and they are fine! They need to stay for a few more days for observation, just to make sure they are both progressing well medically with no side-effects, but they are all right. I can’t tell you how relieved I am, Victoria. It’s like you brought me good luck,” Hendrik replied, his relief palpable and heartfelt.

Victoria’s heart swelled with empathy, and without thinking, she reached out and clasped his hands tightly in hers. The warmth of her touch seemed to ground him further, and he looked down at their joined hands, a mixture of gratitude and surprise in his eyes.

They boarded the ferry, and as the engine hummed to life, Victoria couldn’t resist the urge to hug him. The embrace was unexpected but welcome, and Hendrik wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. The gentle rocking of the ferry and the soothing sound of the water created a serene backdrop for their quiet moment.

The late afternoon quickly turned into evening, which ended relatively soon, both of them exhausted from the stressful days they each had. Hendrik escorted Victoria to her room, and after exchanging goodnights, they both retired to their respective quarters.

The next morning, during a delightful breakfast, Hendrik suggested a walk as it seemed to turn into a beautiful autumn day. It was the perfect opportunity for Victoria to finally have an earnest conversation with him, and she told him as much.

“Henk, I have realized something. I know very little about you, after all this time we have been spending together, and I feel terrible about it. Would you tell me who you are?” Victoria asked, her eyes earnest and searching.

Hendrik sipped his coffee thoughtfully, then nodded. “How about I show you who I am instead, if you are up for it, Princess? A walk, talk and a sort of introduction in my element, we can certainly combine those.”

“All right, sounds great.”

“Wear comfortable shoes, Your Highness. My little island is scenic, but rugged,” Henk advised, his blue eyes twinkling with amusement.

“I can be rugged. I’ll have you know that I spent an entire week on a small horse ranch in Chestnut Ridge with barely running water and indoor plumbing,” Victoria replied with a playful smile.

Hendrik chuckled. “Well, it’s not quite that, but it sounds like you might even enjoy it a little then.” He smiled and winked.

Walking next to him, Victoria couldn’t help but notice how different the air was. It was salty, breezy, and so clear. The calls of seagulls overhead mixed with the rustling of trees and the songs of birds around them. The sun felt cozy, never too warm due to the light breeze always in the air.

She wore a light, flowy blouse in a soft pastel shade, paired with comfortable yet stylish jeans. Her medium warm blonde hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, allowing the gentle breeze to play with the loose strands around her face. Comfortable walking shoes completed her outfit, perfect for exploring the scenic island.

Henk, on the other hand, was dressed in a casual button-down shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His jeans were well-worn and practical for the island’s rugged terrain. He too wore sturdy walking shoes, and his relaxed demeanor was evident in his easy gait.

She admired the interesting architecture specific to this place. The homes seemed rustic yet modern, with their steeply pitched roofs and ornate gables blending seamlessly into the natural landscape. Cobblestone paths wound their way through quaint villages, and flowers spilled from window boxes, adding pops of color to the scene. Everyone they passed greeted them in Dutch, and after the fourth person, Victoria had the Dutch words to respond down pat.

They reached a charming house with an older man working in the backyard. Hendrik pointed out with pride, “They make their own honey.”

“What? Really?” Victoria asked, her curiosity piqued.

The man turned, smiling as he approached the fence to greet Henk. They shook hands like old friends, their conversation flowing easily in their native Dutch. Victoria, unable to understand, looked puzzled until Henk noticed and turned to her.

“Apologies, Victoria, I am being rude. This is Jan Verbeek. He makes the best honey and many delectable products with it.”

“Oh, English, sorry Miss, I wasn’t aware. You could be one of the young ladies from the mainland; they all dress modern and chic like you. Please, please, come on in. My daughter baked her famous honey cake, and we have fresh blueberry preserves and whipped cream fresh from the Terhaart’s dairy farm,” Jan ushered them into his fenced backyard, setting them up on his cozy lawn furniture. Victoria marveled at the homely, inviting atmosphere.

She looked around, feeling the casualness of the setting. “This would never happen back home,” she remarked to Hendrik, who just laughed heartily.

“We are all just people here on the island. I have the job to keep it like this, preserve what we have, keep trade going, and a landsman in charge, so the big guy from the mainland, our wonderful King Alexander, doesn’t get carried away. These good people need me to keep my superior in line for their benefit.”

The old man returned with what looked like an ancient tea set, placing it on the table before them. “Yes, yes, our duke’s dear father almost went to war with the old Windenburgian king over this. Can you imagine? The old von Ahrensberg wanted to turn this island into hunting grounds and make all of us move to the mainland. I have not lived a single day of my 74 years on the mainland, only here! And the young duke has… oh, I forgot what it’s called in English, but he made an agreement with the royals that can never be changed, so they can never displace us or our descendants. This young duke’s family are heroes of the small man, yes, yes.” Jan nodded at Victoria, pointing at Henk, before rushing back inside.

Victoria’s eyes sparkled with curiosity as she turned to Hendrik, who simply shrugged and flashed a mischievous grin. “Quite the praises being sung about you,” she said, a playful lilt in her voice. “I feel as though I should ask for your autograph. How come you never mentioned any of this? And you’re already in politics? But how? You still have another semester at uni, at least.”

Hendrik’s smile widened, his eyes twinkling with a mix of pride and amusement. “Same way you and your siblings know how to be royals. We learn it from our parents and the staff they hire for it. It’s up to us to use modern tools and technologies to better the lives of our people by listening to them. I’m sure it’s the same back home for your father. Your brother already has his own tasks to aid your kingdom; that’s how it started for me, until my father had a heart attack. My mother decided he would prefer retirement over growing ulcers trying to explain our heritage to the von Ahrensberg’s and other royals over and over again. It became my job. Best way to know what the people want is to hear them, and that is best done the way we are doing now. Spend time with them and listen.”

Victoria’s expression shifted to one of concern. “Oh no, we don’t mingle with the commoners, we can’t. Too dangerous. Our security team and Royal Guard already go up on the ramparts each time we have public appearances, usually from behind fences and up on podiums. Especially after what happened to me. You see, my mum is from a famous family too, as you know, and there have been many abduction attempts on her when she was younger. Even a crazed fan of Grandmama’s broke into their home when my mother was still a child. If I tried to just walk through Henford-on-Bagley, our capital, by myself, security would be a nightmare. Plus, there has always been opposition—someone always had some sort of beef with my family, often for the silliest of reasons that had little to do with us. Aren’t you worried?”

Hendrik shook his head, his expression serene. “Not at all. I used to play all over the island since I could barely walk. If I strayed too far, someone would always take me in, feed me, and give me to drink, then walk me back to the estate. I cannot recall a single time in the past century that anyone took issue with my family. Our days of war lay much further back than that, and always had to do with marine warfare, pirates, privateers, and trade. Don’t you enjoy it?”

Victoria’s eyes lit up with a mixture of excitement and longing. “Immensely! It’s so liberating, but it feels as though I was doing things I’m not supposed to. Again.”

Hendrik laughed heartily, the sound warm and inviting. “Let me see if I can corrupt you a little more. Sorry to say we have no horses on the island, but there are many other ways to enjoy life.”

They ate the best cake Victoria had ever tasted, its flavors mingling perfectly with the delicate blend of tea she was served. Hendrik revealed more of himself, and the more he saw she liked it, the less he held back. His laughter rang out like a melody, and Victoria felt as if she was peeling back layers of a complex, fascinating man.

Lykke Center Region – Discovering True Feelings

Later, Hendrik took Victoria to the mainland, where they met people who recognized him as the ‘Dutch Duke.’ He spoke the Scandinavian dialect of the Lykke region perfectly, his words flowing effortlessly. It was clear he was just as popular here as on his own isle, though he humbly reminded her that this region was governed by Baron Lars Eriksen.

They strolled along the cobblestone streets, the crisp, sunny autumn day casting a golden hue over the bustling Scandinavian-inspired Lykke region. The salty breeze from the nearby ocean playfully tussled their hair and carried the scent of freshly baked pastries from the local bakeries.

The Lykke region’s modern architecture with bright accents felt like a forbidden world to Victoria, a stark contrast to the familiar grandeur of Windenburg. They walked the streets, the vibrant colors and sleek designs surrounding them like a living art gallery. They explored shop windows, danced to the tunes of street musicians, and chose cafes on a whim, enticed by the aromas wafting through the air. Through it all, she felt safe with him, the warmth of his presence shielding her from the world’s chaos.

So safe and casual that, at some point after they left a charming café, Victoria grabbed his hand, mimicking the carefree affection she had seen between William and Mina on campus. But the realization hit her like a cold wave, William and Mina were a couple, she and Hendrik were not, and she withdrew her hand swiftly as though it had touched flames, her eyes wide with alarm.

“I am so sorry, Henk! That was… uncalled for. I apologize. I know for people of our status, PDA in public is frowned upon, and I have no right… I don’t know what came over me. So sorry!”

Uncharacteristically, he didn’t dismiss it with a laugh or even a smile, just a grave look. The wind seemed to hold its breath, the world around them pausing.

“I had hoped things might have changed; you seemed to be enjoying yourself, here and with me. Or were you merely being courteous?”

“No, I mean, yes, I always aim to be courteous, but…” Victoria’s voice trembled, and she babbled incoherently, her nerves evident in every syllable. Hendrik gently lifted her chin, his touch tender, and kissed her.

He didn’t cling to her; she was free to pull away at any moment, but the kiss halted her heartbeat, then accelerated it exponentially. For what seemed an eternity, he didn’t let go, nor did she. The gentle rustling of leaves and the distant call of seabirds created a symphony around them, the world fading away as they lost themselves in the moment. Eventually, the kiss concluded, and they looked at each other, the connection between them stronger than ever.

With a rough, low voice, he finally spoke, “One of us should probably say something, and I would, if only I could think of anything to say.”

“So, you DO have feelings for me?” she declared more than questioned.

“I never thought there was any question about this, I was under the impression I had always been as clear as I could appropriately be about that fact. I even went to seek your father’s blessing to court you some months ago. Yet, I’ve always struggled to interpret your feelings on the matter. You surprised me, not just today, but by rushing to my side in my time of need. Luckily disaster was averted, yet you remained. To state it for the record, I would never not enjoy you holding my hand or arm, Victoria. And the fact you did not only not slap my face for the kiss, but as I dare say “

“You spoke to my father? About … courting me?”

Hendrik nodded.

“Hendrik, clearly, I wasn’t aware on how you felt about me. I couldn’t tell if you were just polite. Look, many people are very friendly and accommodating to me, because I was raised from an early age to be pleasant, polite and agreeable, likable, but most are nice to me because of who my father is, and it would be all too easy to misread that as something that isn’t there. I will admit I did know you liked me; just was never sure how deep your interest really went. Why didn’t you ever… um…make it more clear to me? If you even went to Papa with it, why not me?”

“You’re a royal princess, Victoria, I did not want to overstep, not with you by assuming you were even interested, but also not with your father by pursuing you against his will. I am barely at an acceptable rank to even think about courting you, although it appeared your father wasn’t too concerned about ranks, considering there’s also a certain Royal Guard, whose presence seems to affect your judgment, and your father seems to be aware of his. I was unsure of if and what I might be disrupting. To be honest, I feared rejection. I preferred to have you in my life as a friend, or whatever you might call it, rather than risk losing you due to my misguided notion of mutual affection.”

Victoria’s heart raced as she asked, “You’re saying you… you feel affection towards me? Romantically?” She didn’t just ignore the part about Liam; she genuinely was more interested in Hendrik’s feelings about her right now.

“Yes, that’s exactly what I feel. Strongly, intensely, and genuinely,” Hendrik confessed, his voice firm yet tender.

Victoria stared at him, her eyes widening with realization. Then, as if a dam had burst within her, she shot forward, grabbing his face with both hands and kissed him. All the etiquette and rules she had been held to all her life melted away in that moment.

Her kiss ignited with passion as he reciprocated, embracing her tightly. Their kiss deepened in a manner Victoria had never experienced. For the first time in her 18 years, she felt an overwhelming passion that surpassed anything she had ever known. She had only encountered such intensity in books, films, or among her non-royal relatives. Even her few fleeting encounters with Liam paled in comparison to this moment.

As they parted, both were left breathless, their gazes locked in a silent exchange. The autumn breeze caressed their flushed faces, carrying the scent of the ocean and rustling the leaves around them.

His voice had grown even huskier. “I honestly forgot what I was going to show you next. I am having a hard time recalling my own name at the moment.”

Victoria’s lips curved into a smile. “You’ve revealed everything I needed to see, Henk, well beyond the local sights. I feel foolish for not realizing it sooner. William was right—about you, about everything. This moment, this sensation, it’s what you described. You were right there all along, and I was oblivious. Forgive me.”

Hendrik shook his head gently, his eyes soft. “There’s nothing to forgive; there’s no guidebook for emotions and feelings. I wish I could offer some profound insight, but my mind is empty. Would you like to continue sightseeing, or do you prefer to return to the Estate?”

Victoria’s smile widened as she teased, “Would you like the response I ought to give as the Princess Royale of Henfordshire, or would you like to hear what I’m truly thinking?”

With a smile and raised eyebrows, he replied, “Always the truth.”

Her smile mirrored his as she leaned in to whisper in his ear, prompting him to react like a young man who had just received an irresistible offer from a charming young woman. Seizing her hand, he led her in a sprint back to the duchy’s private ferry, their laughter mingling in the air. As the ferry departed from the mainland, they were seen sharing a kiss by the railing, the now setting casting a romantic glow over them.

Landgoed Windroos, Zeehaven Isle – A New Beginning

Later that night, in her room, Victoria made a call to her brother.

“You were right, and I needed to tell you that. Go ahead with the ‘I-told-you-sos,’ William. I don’t even care, he is dreamy. Kissing him feels incredible! I thought I enjoyed kissing Liam, but this is something else…”

“Hey, Victoria! Remember, I’m still your brother, and I really don’t need to hear those details. In fact, I’m pleading with you to keep them to yourself. But it sounds like you found what you were looking for? And how are his parents? I thought you went there to show your support, not kiss him?!”

“Oh, his parents are fine, scheduled to be released in a few days, just in the hospital for observation. So instead, we got to know each other better, like you suggested and, oh my, what a treasure trove of a man he is! Instead of telling me who he really was, he showed me, and I could not even begin to describe how amazing it has been. He answered every question I might have had without even trying. He’s wonderful, Will. How come you never mentioned it until the plane ride home? I had no idea—and if you knew how blinded I was by Liam and all he would never be to me, you should have told me to take a closer look at Henk, as I really couldn’t see, but I do now. What a man! And what a kisser. I don’t know how to describe…” Into his sister’s reveling, William interrupted her, chuckling.

“Again, I am your brother, not whomever you have such girl talks with. Little Lotte, I am happy for you that you are so happy, but I truly do not want to hear about you kissing boys and such. You are welcome for the nudge, I tried to before, we all have, especially father, but you weren’t ready to hear us over all the noise pining after Liam filled your head with. I always thought Hendrik and you would be a great match—you have so much in common, but not too much, so it won’t get boring, just like it is with Mina and me. But there was no talking to you if it came to Liam, not until you were ready to hear us, and now you were.”

“Will, you ARE whom I have such girl talks with. Maybe Mummy, but not if Liam is involved. She liked him, until she found out about his late mother’s involvement with what happened to all of us, then her support cooled. She knows it’s not his fault, but… so had I talked to her, she would have been very biased and been Team Henk all the way. Now I don’t mind it. I actually prefer it. Are you going to tell them?”

“No, Victoria, I am back on campus again, preparing for yet another exam. It is for you to tell anyone whatever might be developing between you and Hendrik.”

“Right, thank you. I will. Hm, do you think I should tell Liam too? Not like I think I owe him any explanations, but don’t want him to be sidelined by whatever this may become.” Victoria’s voice grew quieter and a brief pause happened, into which William sighed deeply, before speaking somberly.

“I don’t think that will be much of a problem, to be perfectly honest with you. Not sure if I should be telling you this but, on my ride out today– Mina and I went home after the exams for some R & R and some horseback riding— she and I saw Liam. With Eloise. And the scene didn’t leave much to the imagination.”

“That’s probably the real reason why he was so hot and cold. Eloise, that goody two shoes has been in his head.”

“Victoria, Ellie isn’t at fault. You know she isn’t the type to go steal boys who don’t want to be stolen, I have no doubt he started it, and she just jumped in with both feet, offering him all she had to keep him. She’s simply excited that a boy is paying attention to her. Her mother and aunt have been eager to find her a suitable match, doing all their nefarious nonsense only hurting her more. And from what you and Mina say, Liam is quite the catch from a girl’s perspective. Ellie seems to concur, considering how passionately they kissed today. Then she accompanied him inside the house. I should mention that the old Earl is away for a few days, and that Mina and I later met Gavin and Claire, who have also been riding out and not home. Meaning, it was obvious to Mina and me that Liam and Eloise had the estate to themselves. I’m not one to conjure up gossip, but it’s unlikely they spent the afternoon just drinking tea, if you catch my drift. I’m pleased to hear you’re moving forward, as my observation would suggest Liam has.”

A sharp sting pierced Victoria, and following a bit more idle chatter, she concluded the call. She was certain of her feelings for Hendrik now, but the revelation that Liam, oblivious to her revelation from just this afternoon, had casually enjoyed time with her cousin without ever attempting to challenge the system for her, filled her with anger. All his talk about loving her, caring, had clearly been idle banter at best, and lies at worst.

As she sought to divert her mind from the fact that her teenage crush was not one to reject certain advances, the day’s escapades came rushing back. She recalled the taste of the exquisite honeycake enjoyed in a stranger’s garden, a sensation only outdone by the exhilarating taste of newfound freedom during an unguarded amble through the lively streets of the Lykke Center area with the most charming host, accompanied by a kaleidoscope of unique flavors, sounds, impressions, and sights, in the presence of someone who made her feel valued, seen, and safe. Then came the kiss. The act of kissing him. Being kissed by him. Without anyone enumerating the reasons why they shouldn’t, Hendrik simply relished it. And so had she. The experience of kissing him was extraordinary…

She sat up, resolve in her eyes. With her mind made up, Victoria swiftly changed out of her formal attire and into something more comfortable and discreet. She chose a soft, flowing knee length nightgown in a delicate shade of lavender, paired with a lightweight robe that complemented the gown. Her medium warm blonde hair was left loose, cascading down her back, and she slipped into a pair of comfortable, quiet slippers.

Within moments, she stepped into the hallway. Unlike her home, it was devoid of guards, only the echo of her footsteps filled the space as she looked around, uncertain of where to go.

“Kan ik u ergens mee van dienst zijn, Uwe Hoogheid?” came a voice, preceded by a slight clearing of the throat, causing her to startle and turn towards the butler.

“What?” she replied, her heart racing.

“My apologies, I forgot your preference for English, Your Highness. May I be of assistance?”

“Oh, no, thank you very much. Umm… ‘Veel dank.’ I believe that’s correct. I hope so.”

The butler bowed, “That was most perfect, Your Highness, and you are most welcome. Oh, and if there is anything worrying you, please rest assured that His Grace’s chambers are merely at the end of this very hall.” He added, gesturing at a door at the end of the hallway, and Victoria could have sworn she spotted a slight wink, enough to make her blush deeply, while the butler left.

Standing there, trying to decide what to do, she shrugged to herself.

“Since he already thinks I would… well… let’s be honest, that is exactly what I was planning. Why not? I am old enough.”

She hastened down the corridor, her heart pounding with each stride, until she reached his door and knocked.

“Kom binnen!” came the reply. Unsure if the Dutch meant to enter or not, she sighed, opened the door, and stepped inside. Hendrik was there, looking up at her in his boxers, his gaze fixed on her as if she were an apparition. He quickly snatched the decorative blanket from his bed and held it in front of himself, eyes wide with shock.

“Victoria! I wasn’t expecting it to be you! I thought you were the butler!”

“Henk, I… I know it is inappropriate for me to just come to your room, especially uninvited, but I needed to see you now. Oh boy, in books and movies, this moment always seems so much simpler, effortless, and so much more romantic. I had planned my words carefully, but now my brain is utterly blank, leaving me speechless.”

Hendrik’s face turned a shade of red that matched the decor. “Uh, well, I’m not exactly dressed for visitors either. I mean, this is quite the surprise.”

Victoria stammered, her cheeks flushing deeper. “I… I can see that. You’re… you’re disrobed. I mean, you’re in your boxers.”

Both their faces turned a deeper shade of red, the awkwardness thick in the air.

Hendrik fumbled with the blanket, trying to maintain some semblance of dignity. “Uh, right. Let me just, um, put on some joggers or something.”

She nodded, unable to tear her eyes away from him. “Yes, please.”

Hendrik almost tripped over himself in his haste to find a pair of joggers. He quickly pulled them on, glancing back at her, a small, awkward smile on his face. “There, much better. So, what did you want to talk about?”

Victoria took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “I wanted to tell you that… well, being here with you today, it made me realize some things. Important things.”

Hendrik’s expression softened, his eyes locking onto hers. “I’m listening.”

They stood there in awkward silence, the tension thick in the air. Hendrik fumbled with his hands, while Victoria tried to look everywhere else but at him.

“I am sorry, this is really awkward. Should I… should I go?” Victoria asked, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.

“No, please stay. I mean, unless you want to go. But, um, I’d like you to stay,” Hendrik stammered, his voice a mix of sincerity and nerves.

Victoria took a tentative step forward, her heart still racing. “Okay, but could you, maybe, put on a shirt or something? I like the view, but it’s a bit… distracting.”

Nodding, he raised a finger, opening a drawer and slipping a blue shirt over his head, glancing back at her with a small, awkward smile on his face. “There, mostly presentable. Apologies again.”

“I am sorry too. I shouldn’t have done that, just burst into your private quarters. I made both of us very uncomfortable, that was rude of me. Not to mention I am so embarrassed now and not sure how to handle myself and this situation,” Victoria admitted, her voice quivering slightly.

“That makes two of us. I’m at a loss for what to do or say and I am the host here. Court etiquette classes never covered what to do when a beautiful princess enters your room.”

“You find me beautiful?” she asked with a flirtatious smile.

“Of course I do, I have eyes, don’t I? Victoria, I promised your father I would be the utmost gentleman during your visit, especially since my parents are in the hospital and all my employees go home at night, except for Hugo. The butler.”

“The one who told me where to find your room?” she smiled.

“Oh boy. At least he’s trustworthy. He won’t tell anyone you were here. At least, that’s what I hope.”

“Maybe he should. Worked out for my brother and Mina. Their relationship started with a vile rumor, they barely knew each other past first names, and they had to go from platonic to engaged. Now look at them, the perfect couple.”

Chuckling at her words, Hendrik relaxed a little, smiled his smile which Victoria now realized she found enticingly handsome. She stepped towards him, he looked as if he would step away, but stayed, after slight hesitation, placed her hands onto his chest, surprised at the way his heart was pounding almost as hard as hers.

The room was dimly lit, shadows dancing on the walls from the moonlight streaming through the tall windows. The quiet hum of the night outside contrasted with the electric tension between them. She could hear the distant calls of night birds and the soft rustling of leaves, adding to the surreal quality of the moment.

“I… I wanted to tell you that I…” she began, her voice barely a whisper, “I can’t stop thinking about you. My visit here has been nothing short of magical.”

His eyes widened, and for a moment, he seemed to lose his composure, his own awkwardness mirroring hers. “Victoria, I… I’ve felt the same way for a long while now. But I didn’t know how to say it. I didn’t think you would want me to say it, and if I did, I feared it might turn you away.”

Instead of answering, she looked up at him, then gently ran her fingers across his cheek before pulling his face closer. Rising on her tiptoes, she moved in slow motion, her lips finding his again. The kiss was soft and gentle, and they parted slowly, but instead of letting her step back, he pulled her closer. She could clearly feel his body’s reaction to the moment, yet he didn’t even attempt to make a move on her.

Her heart pounded, a mixture of relief and nervous excitement. “So, what do we do now?” she whispered into his chest.

She felt him inhale, placing his face against hers, whispering his answer into her ear. His tone, voice, words, and the soft breath felt enticing to her. “Anything you like, Victoria. You will set the pace. Except for one thing, I have waited long enough and reserve the right.”

“What?” she asked, her voice failing her for a moment.

His lips found her ear again, she felt his breath and the sensation of him speaking near it as he said, “I love you, Victoria.”

Her knees gave out, and with quick reflexes, he caught her, pulling her to his bed. They sat next to each other, as inappropriate as it might be, neither of them cared.

“You said it. You really said it to me. It feels … significant. Amazing.”

“Less amazing to me, considering you haven’t said it back. Seems I wasn’t done waiting on you after all…”

Her eyes snapped up to his, widening, then she looked at her hands, shaking her head.

“No. I am just surprised. I came here as a friend, to support you in your time of need, yet you changed my life showing me all this, showing me you, and now I… am sitting on your bed, telling you…” she looked straight at him. “That I love you, too, Hendrik.”

He kissed her, and the world seemed to melt away. The kiss started soft, but as their emotions intertwined, it deepened into something more profound and electrifying. Fireworks sparked behind her closed eyelids, and time seemed to stand still.

Victoria felt as if she had entered a new level, a different sort of realism where everything felt more vivid and intense. The sound of their mingled breathing was the only thing she could hear over the rapid beating of her heart.

When they finally parted, both were breathless, nearly panting, and staring into each other’s eyes.

His voice was even huskier now. “More than worth the wait. Apologies, was meant as a light-hearted ice breaker, but sounds terrible out loud.”

“No, it didn’t. And it’s true. Speaking of truth, that’s what you have always given me and you deserve the same in return. I did make you wait, and I regret nothing more than that now. I was blinded by a mirage that was never even truly there, something I wanted to be there, to be true, since long before I ever met you, and because of that, I couldn’t really see you. But now I do. Boy, do I ever see you now, Hendrik. You’ve shown me so much in the past two days. I came here because I always genuinely cared about you, out of honest concern, to support you, but instead you’ve transformed my entire life. Today, I felt truly free for the first time. All my life has been spent in a gilded cage I have been trying to break out of, yet all it got me was abducted for the two worst weeks of my entire life. You gave me something I never thought I’d have, freedom. Yet, you made me feel safe without guards and security, without walls and fences, which I haven’t for a while. Effortlessly you’ve accomplished precisely what I needed from you; you’ve shown me your true self. Everyone we met today, all your people adore you, almost worship you, yet they have no issue inviting you for tea and cake as if you were family, and me as well, even though none of them even knew who I was. I’ve never experienced anything like that. It’s bewildering and beautiful.
My family is well-loved by our people too, but it would never occur to any of us, let alone be anything but a logistical security drama, to just step into someone’s backyard for a cuppa. You’ve shown me what I needed to see, the real you. Surprisingly, it’s exactly who you’ve always been. I feel foolish for not realizing it earlier. The minute I saw you, really saw you, I instantly fell for you, Henk, like I have read in my books so many times, yet never thought I would get to experience. William was completely right about you, about everything. This sensation right now, this is it. You’ve been right there in front of me all along, and I was oblivious. I have treated you discourteously, unkindly, recklessly. Please forgive me.”

Hendrik gently touched her hand. “There is nothing to forgive. I knew all this, and if there was even a glimmer of hope beyond platonic friendship, your inquisitive mind would find it. I’ve always admired that about you. And you see, I was right.”

She nodded, feeling a sense of calm amidst the whirlwind of emotions. They sat there for a moment, the world outside forgotten, lost in each other’s presence, as the night embraced them in its silent witness.

He smiled softly. “Would you like to continue talking or shall I walk you back to your room?”

Victoria looked around the dimly lit room, the moonlight streaming through the tall windows, casting a soft glow on the bed where they sat. The quiet hum of the night outside contrasted with the electric tension between them.

“Would you mind if I stayed here a bit longer? I am not ready to let go of this strange sensation yet.”

“Stay. All night if you like. We can sit here and talk or be quiet. We can lay if you want, or anything else. As I told you, you set the pace.”

She looked back onto his bed, pulled off her robe, kicked off her slippers, then crawled to the further side of his bed, laying down, smiling at him, he pulled off his shirt, but kept his jogging pants on, then followed suit, lying next to her, his hand finding hers, folding around it.

Hand in hand, they continued their conversation, each word filled with unspoken promises and new beginnings. The air was filled with a sweet tension, and the night stretched ahead, full of possibilities, leaving their future open. Both awoke the next morning, next to each other, she on his arm, making her smile. Gently running her fingers up his arm, across his chest, then carefully across his face, his smile giving him away as awake, so she tickled his sides till he caught her hands, then kissed her. Leaning over her, she smiled.

“This is a dream of mine come true.”

“I was just gonna say …”

An energic knock on the door, followed by the butler appearing, instantly averting his eyes, while telling them in proper English for Victoria’s sake.

“Apologies, Your Grace, Your Highness. You had a rather urgent phone call, Your Grace.”

“Was it really this important? Can I return it …LATER?”

“It was the hospital. They are releasing your dear parents as we speak. I thought you might wish to be … prepared.” he cleared this throat.

“I thought they’d keep them all week?” Hendrik sat up, clearly surprised.

“It would appear that they are of the best of health despite the years, we expect them to arrive by 10 AM. Shall have breakfast served now, or would you prefer a brunch with your parents, Your Grace?” the butler inquired.

“Ahem, I don’t know. Are you hungry, love?” he asked Victoria, blushing as deeply as she did, when she shook her head.

“Me neither. We’ll wait for my parents to have brunch then. Thank you, Hugo.”

“Mylord. Mylady.” he bowed and exited.

Hendrik and Victoria’s eyes met.

“That was rather uncalled for, and awkward. Full disclosure, this was a first for a lot of things, among them, a girl in my room. I can have a talk with him later to make clear this wasn’t … that.”

Victoria smiled, then crawled over next to him, kissed his cheek, before swinging her legs over the edge of the bed, glancing back up at him.

“Not on my account. I don’t mind the rumors …. lover.” she winked, then tried to get up, but he caught her hips and pulled her into his lap, kissing her.

“Lover? I must have missed things. Maybe a mild stroke when the excitement became too overwhelming. Maybe temporary amnesia,” Hendrik teased, a playful grin tugging at his lips.

Victoria chuckled softly. “Well, maybe not lover in every sense of the term, not yet. But I do not mind people jumping to assumptions about us. Do you?” She looked at him with a teasing glint in her eyes.

Hendrik’s expression softened, his eyes filled with warmth. “I want to shout it off the rooftops. But that might not be necessary. If my parents find you here and have any inkling on the evolution of our relationship over the past days, they might rent entire billboards to proclaim it far and wide. My mother particularly was rather unhappy with my lack of female companionship through the years.”

Victoria raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk on her face. “Oh, so you wouldn’t mind me staying even though you clearly don’t need my moral support?” she teased, before Hendrik pulled her back onto the bed and kissed her gently.

“It would be so rude to leave now. My parents adore you and would be heartbroken if you didn’t join us for brunch. And lunch. And afternoon coffee and cake. And dinner. And an after-dinner snack. And breakfast. And brunch. And lunch. And…” For each meal, he kissed her, until she put her hand over his mouth, laughing hard.

“Stop, mercy, please! That is a lot of meals, Your Grace. Surely you wouldn’t want to be attached to a round ball of a girlfriend? Or is that the grand plan, feed me too round to leave?” she giggled, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

“It sounds like a perfect plan. But then again, you won’t get too far, I would see you on campus again, come Monday,” Hendrik replied, his voice filled with affection and mischief.

“Oh, right. Imagine, we are gonna be a campus couple now. Like my brother and Wilhelmina! Will you hold my hand and kiss me at lunch and games and such?” Victoria asked, her excitement palpable.

“There will be nothing keeping me from it,” Hendrik assured her, his eyes locking onto hers with unwavering determination.

Squealing with delight, she jumped up, kissed him one more time, then dashed out of his room. Hendrik plopped backwards onto his bed, letting out a triumphant “Woo!” laughing he added, “Wow, that was amazing and most unexpected…”

The door creaked open again, and Victoria’s face peeked in, her expression sheepish. Hendrik lifted his head, looking at her standing in the doorway, creating another awkward moment.

“Oh, thank goodness, this is the right room. Your hallways are confusing! Would you mind walking me to my room? It seems I’ve rather forgotten which door is mine, and after trying three that weren’t it I am worried I’d awaken the castle ghost before I make it to my suitcase in time…I don’t mind your parents knowing about us, but prefer it to be relayed in a more civilized way than for them to find me roaming the hallways in my nightgown at 10 AM.”

Hendrik’s face twisted into utter amusement, and they both burst into laughter, the sound echoing down the hallway.
