Vampire Lore and Legacy

The Anatomy of a Vampire Vampires closely resemble mortals in appearance and behavior. Their condition, often called “the spark,” halts normal bodily functions like digestion and heartbeat, replacing these with alternative methods of nourishment—primarily blood or plasma. This mutation also drastically slows the aging process, granting near-immortality. Permanent, non-retractable fangs and a noticeable chill to the touch betray their true nature. To avoid detection, most vampires keep others at arm’s length, expertly blending into human society.

The Journey to Immortality Vampires may either be turned or born with “the spark.” Those born with it live like mortals until puberty, when hormonal changes trigger a dramatic transformation akin to that of newly turned adults. Until then, they retain a heartbeat, appetite, and the ability to digest food, though their unidentifiable blood type hints at their supernatural heritage. These young vampires endure sunlight without tanning, further masking their true nature.

Supernatural Abilities

  • Teleportation: Known as “porting,” this skill requires years of practice to master.
  • Daywalking: Many vampires gradually adapt to daylight, allowing them to move undetected among humans.
  • Enhanced Senses: Superior vision, hearing, and a sensitivity to other occult beings, though training is required to hone these abilities.
  • Compulsion: A hypnotic skill enabling mind control, also requiring training.
  • Reproduction: While vampires can reproduce, birthing offspring is preferred for genetic continuity. Elders (250+ years) have limited reproductive success, though pairings with young mortals offer some hope.

Dining Contrary to myths, vampires can consume regular food and drink for enjoyment or appearances, though these provide no nourishment and cannot satisfy their ‘thirst.’

Mortality of the Immortal Vampires may be immortal, but they are not invincible. They can die from various causes, including suicide. Newly turned vampires often perish within a week if abandoned by their Sire or another mentor.

Sun exposure remains the leading cause of death, despite many modern vampires becoming daywalkers. Fatal toxins, such as concentrated garlic oil, are lethal to all vampires, regardless of age or strength. Upon death, vampires rapidly age to their mortal equivalent. Elders crumble to dust, while newer vampires leave behind bodies suitable for burial.

Rules and Laws of Vampire Society Vampires fall into two categories: those born vampires, who are often more powerful, and those who are turned. Strict laws govern both.

  • Every turning requires the Grand Master Elder’s approval; unauthorized turns face harsh penalties.
  • Sires must mentor their progeny until they are fully integrated into vampire society.
  • Feeding on minors, pregnant individuals, or the infirm is strictly forbidden, as is public feeding without consent. Synthetic blood and plasma fruit are encouraged alternatives.
  • Killing humans or other vampires is a capital crime.

Romantic bonds with other species, once forbidden, are now permitted—with the exception of witches and werewolves. Vampires covet witch blood for its power, leading to centuries of enmity and myths that forced both species into hiding.

Infrastructure Vampire society is led by Grand Master Elder Count Cesare Vannucci, who rules from Castello di Vatore in Forgotten Hollow. His nephew, Riordan Hargrave, serves as his trusted advisor, while his sister, Countess Caterina Dimitrescu (nee Vannucci), maintains order from Ravenwood.

Some of Cesare’s descendants, including his son Caelan, grandson Connell, and great-grandson Damon, enforce his laws as Coven Enforcers, a role steeped in ancient chivalry.

Traditional covens, steeped in gendered roles, are being challenged by younger vampires seeking equality. Though many dwell in vampire strongholds like Forgotten Hollow and Ravenwood, others live among humans, revealing their true nature only to a trusted few.

Since their emergence, vampires have inspired both reverence and fear. Some humans embrace them; others retaliate with aggression, hiring hunters or spreading myths. Their preference for black clothing is both a stylistic choice and a practical means of blending into the shadows.
